about

River continues the intimate storytelling and soaring vocal arrangements established on last year’s single ‘Blessed’. ‘River’ takes lyrical inspiration from August’s mother tongue ‘Tonga’ originating from Zambia. The line ‘Bola Mwinchangu’ (pronounced Wo-la Mwing-Chang-Gooo) is prominent throughout the track, which means ‘Come My Brother’ in translation.

‘River’ offers an insight into the life of August's close family member who went through a lot of pain and struggle as a child, exploring themes of manipulation, lies and emotional reflection. The abuse detailed in the song led August to see the world in a distorted light. By telling the story in song form, August hopes to achieve a sense of catharsis and find a silver lining to take from it. ‘River’ was produced by Gabriel Gifford and includes performances from a number of Leeds-based jazz musicians.
